HOME                                 Birmingham and environs

Birmingham in winter - well that is not exactly tourist weather. However a tourist can still take in a lot, especially indoor activity. So enjoy whatever you can, and the following pictures may provide you a glimpse of what you will be seeing.  There is a great deal of English history in the area, including Stratford-upon-Avon, which is a must visit for everyone.

Shakespeare's birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon

And the church inside which he is buried. He is inside not because of his writing prowess, but because of some financial transaction he had entered into. This church has its own peculiar definition of respect - they will not allow photographs to be taken out of respect. But at the same time they collect a pound from each person who wants to view Shakespeare's grave!

Anne Hathaway's famous cottage, in as serene a location as you will find. Shakespeare used to walk a mile or so from Stratford to woo her, and you can retrace the path that he probably took then.

Birmingham's version of London's famous millennium wheel.

A statue in what passes for Birmingham's central square, or one of them any way. The tree in the background was sent by the people of Norway, who send one every year to remember Britain's assistance during WWII.

Hard to believe, but narrow canal boats regularly travel these canals, raising and lowering the lock gates. The countryside is criss-crossed by such canals.
